The Council

The Council meets three times a year. It is the supreme body of the British Institute of Technology & E-commerce and with the support of external reports, approves the Vision, Mission and Strategic Direction of the Institute.


More specifically the Council will:

• Offer advice on the content of the Strategic Plan of BITE including the Vision, Mission and overall Strategic Direction and confirm that it has been produced following best business practice. It is envisaged that this will include the choice of Key Performance Indicators generated by the Strategic Plan, monitoring the performance of BITE against its Key Performance Indicators, and the provision of a written report on a bi-annual basis;

• Advise on the organisation and management structure developed to deliver the Strategic Plan and confirm that it adheres to best business practice;

• Approve all the major strategies of BITE including the Research Strategy, Marketing Strategy and Brand, Consultancy Strategy, Academic Development, Assessment and Quality Assurance;

• Approve all the QA policies and procedures of BITE and monitor regularly the academic performance, standards and quality of the Institute and provide a written bi-annual report.

The current membership includes; the chair, - Lord Ahmed, CEO Professor M Farmer, and council member Professor L Hobson OBE, with Dr Peter Robinson acting as Secretary. It is envisaged that the external full members of the Council will increase slowly over time as BITE grows and the full members will be chosen for their experience and expertise.

The minimum size of the Council will be 5 members growing to no more than 13 lay members in line with most modern UK HEIs. It is envisaged that some senior members of BITE will be in attendance as will other senior staff of BITE, as appropriate. The Council may set up sub-committees to help it carry out its duties, and will also receive regular reports from the Senior Management Board (strategic direction, business and management matters) and the Academic Board (all academic issues).

 

The first Chancellor of the British Institute of Technology & E-commerce, Lord Ahmed is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary group on Entrepreneurship and an influential member of the House of Lords.

A cross-bench member of the House of Lords, Lord Erroll was educated at Eton and Cambridge. He is President of the E-business Network and Chairman of the Information Society Alliance (EURIM).

Baroness Jennie Tonge was elected to Parliament in 1997 and made a life peer in 2005. Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for Health from 2009-10, she joined BITE Council in October 2011.

Professor Porter was Director of Technology at GCHQ before becoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Glamorgan University. He is also Chair of Governors at University College Plymouth St Mark and St John.

The founder of the British Institute of Technology & E-commerce. A computer scientist by discipline, He received the Chartered Manager of the Year 2012, London Award at the House of Commons on 21 Junes 2012- Chartered Management Institute. He is a fellow of the Institute of Directors and life member. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is a fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.

A graduate of Cambridge University, Professor Hobson spent over 30 years in UK HE and was awarded an OBE in 2007 for his services to Higher Education in Wales.

Chief Executive of Gateway to London (GTL), an inward investment agency charged with attracting investment into the Thames Gateway, Mr Dalvi was awarded an OBE in 2000 for his services to housing.

Sir Graeme is Emeritus Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, having been Vice-Chancellor there from October 2003 to August 2010.

A journalist, public relations specialist and author who has worked for the BBC and the South China Morning Post, he has acted as Secretary to the Council since its formation in 2008.
